During a recent meeting with a potential client, I was told the following: 


"I do not have the time to worry about the cleaning, I just need a contractor, who has the checks and systems in place to manage their staff and the work that they are carrying out on our premises. If they can’t do that I may as well hire a cleaner directly and do it in house"


So many companies, seem to treat their clients as if they are just providing cleaning labour and not a service. Do little or nothing to ensure staff are onsite, on-time, complete the work correctly, as scheduled and as requested, to the standard the clients requires.

Hard Floor Maintenance - Strip & Seal

There are many types of hard flooring that require periodic maintenance. It is good practice to undertake the maintenance of hard flooring on a planned basis, this will protect the top surface from becoming scratched and worn.Gemini Facility Services undertake Strip & Seals using safe stripping agents to remove all of the ingrained dirt from within the surface including any bevel edges and textured or embossed surface. Once the floor surface has been thoroughly deep cleaned and stripped back removing all contaminants and residues, it is important to neutralise and rinse the floor allowing it to dry fully before applying any protective coating.

Working Alone in Safety

Controlling the risks of lone workers:

Is it legal to work alone and is it safe? There is no single answer: it will depend on the results of risk assessments but more often than not, the answer will be a resounding yes.

Employers have responsibilities for the health, safety and welfare of their employees and the health and safety of those affected by the work. These responsibilities cannot be transferred to lone workers. It is the employers duty to assess risks to lone workers and take steps to avoid or control risk where necessary.

Employees have responsibilities to take reasonable care of themselves and others people affected by their work and to co-operate with their employers in meeting their own legal obligations.

Training Employees To Use Colour-Coded Equipment

According to microbiologists, by simply touching a contaminated surface and then coming into contact with another surface will quickly spread diseases around any facility. Cold and flu viruses are found on 30 percent of surfaces in commercial offices, pair this with the fact that people touch about 30 objects a minute (their keyboard keys, mouse, pens, phone buttons, etc.) and it is easy to see why cross-contamination is a serious threat. Whilst these statistics are alarming enough, keep in mind this only pertains to office areas. Imagine how bad it would be if diseases from the bathroom find their way into the office. 

Using colour-coded mop heads, buckets, microfibre cloths and other hand tools will help reduce the potential for cross-contamination by ensuring tools used to clean high-risk areas stay in those areas and that other tools do not enter.

The industry standard colour-coding system includes red for high-risk areas such as toilets and urinals; yellow for low-risk bathroom areas including sinks and mirrors; blue for all-purpose cleaning (dusting, window cleaning, wiping desks, etc.) in other areas of a facility; and green for food-service areas. However, some building service contractors devise their own color combinations to meet their specific needs.

Transitioning to a colour-coded system should be as simple as switching from one coloured product to many, but unfortunately, things are never that simple. Once employees understand they are reducing the spread of germs, most get on board immediately and with few problems, for some employees colour-coding even brings about a sense of empowerment. Using specific colours also makes it easier for supervisors to monitor staff and make sure they are cleaning correctly. Colour coding is not "rocket science" but unfortunately there are still many sites that I found not to have implemented such basic systems of housekeeping.

How a regular cleaning schedule can reduce the need for reactive maintenance

Reactive maintenance is an integral part of running any business, unexpected repairs or equipment replacements can be expensive and take time. However, introducing a cleaning strategy will help keep the incidents requiring reactive maintenance to a minimum and save you time and money.

Sticking to a regular cleaning schedule, whilst helping your facility look clean, hygienic, and presentable for clients, is also a way to ensure that aspects of your business are kept running smoothly. For example, if dust builds up in your air vents, this can affect your air conditioning system, which can cause irreparable damage and lead to a breakdown. Regular cleaning of the vents will prevent this from happening.

Gemini Welcomes it's new Ladderless Window Cleaning System

We at Gemini Facility Services have recently invested in a pure water-fed pole window cleaning system. The equipment allows us to clean windows, signage, fascia and cladding up to approximately 5 stories high with out the use of ladders or expensive powered access equipment. For this reason, work efficiency is improved. The time we spend on site is reduced. This all add up to cost savings for our company and our clients.

A soft bristled brush is used to scrub the dirt off the glass, while jets of pure water rinse the window. The pure water, as it has no impurities, dries to a spot-free finish leaving no marks behind. No chemicals are used during the cleaning process which is good for the environment.
